Speaker Extension Project Question: How do I post to the IBO blog? August 30, 2010

Filed under: Honors — Ms. Dillard @ 1:10 am

So one of the possible speaker extension projects is to create and moderate an online discussion at IBO.org.  How does it work?

  1. Go to IBO.org (This is the home page for the International Baccalaureate Organization)
  2. Click on the “Community Theme” tab (blue / top of the page)
  3. First you will need to register.  Click on the blue button on the right hand side of the page.  It says “Register” and has a picture of a pen.
  4. When you register you will have to indicate what your affiliation with the IB program is.  Select “IB student”.
  5. After you complete the registration process, you will need to check your email before being able to log in.  It make take awhile.  When I registered, I didn’t get the email for an hour or two.
  6. After you log in, make sure to change your password to something you will remember.
  7. Now it’s time to blog.  Select “Community Theme Blog” on the right hand side of the page.
  8. Next you want to click on “Post” (right hand side of the page / next to the large blue envelope)
  9. You’re almost there!  The last detail is that it will ask you who your blog is for.  I would select “students”, though you could also select “everyone”.
  10. Now for the hard part…you have to decide what to say.  The idea is to, as the Sunset Honors Guide says,”share their ideas, experiences, and feedback from the speaker with students from around the world in an online format.” Basically, the idea is to talk about who the speaker was, the information they shared, and the thoughts you had during and after listening to the speaker. Did anything you heard relate back to something we’ve been studying in class?  What connections to poverty did you hear discussed?  What about connections to current events?  At the end of your post, ask some thought provoking questions.
  11. After you’ve submitted the post, prepare a small, 1/2 page flyer that I can photocopy for the class.  It should give the class instructions on how to create their own account, find your blog, and comment.
  12. Once I get your flyer, I will photocopy it and then announce to the class that they can get extra credit if they comment on your blog entry.  If they do, it will be your job to respond to their posts / comments / questions.  It is also your job to respond to anyone else who responds to your blog…even people half way around the world!

You may not repeat this assignment with other speakers more than once.
